On the auspicious day of 7th August 2025, coinciding with the 13th Day of the 6th Month of the Wood Female Year, the Department of Civil Registration and Census, Ministry of Home Affairs, officially launched the 4th Generation Citizenship Identity Card (4G CID).
The event was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Nangsid Lyonpo as Chief Guest.
This launch marks a major technological upgrade, prompted by the aging 3rd Generation CID card printers, which have exceeded their service life of over twelve years. With spare parts no longer available, any breakdown would halt service delivery. The shift to advanced laser engraving technology ensures greater reliability and continuity.
The Department affirms that existing 3G CID cards remain valid, and the 4G CID cards will be issued only upon expiry of current cards.
This milestone reflects the Department’s ongoing commitment to delivering secure, efficient, and digitally integrated identity services, aligned with national public service modernization goals.
